Sample page 2: Introduction

You may do many presentations in your job, or as a guest speaker, so why should you treat job interview presentations differently from other presentations?

Simply, your job presentation is likely to be the most important presentation you ever make. In all, if you want the job, there is too much at stake – its significance is much higher than most other presentations.

In addition:

  1. A great presentation, if delivered at the beginning, will set the tone for the rest of the interview. If given later, it can salvage the situation if you have made a poor start.
  2. Unlike other presentations, where you are given a special status in relation to the audience, interviewers have the power position throughout. Sometimes they will interrupt you, or attend to something else, or whisper to their colleagues, just to see how you cope with the extra pressure.
  3. In most presentations it may be bad manners, but it is not usually a disaster, if you run slightly over time. With an interview presentation you must never take longer than the allotted time. If you do, they will assume that you have poor timekeeping skills. The chair of the interview panel may also resent you for being forced to curtail the rest of the time allotted to interview questions.

It is therefore extremely important to present well and there are considerable consequences if you do not.

The first step to doing well is to understand the reasons why you may have been asked to make the presentation, and how to turn them to your advantage…
